Every morning before and afternoon after school, rain or shine, hot or cold, Senior Malachi Laschke was and continues to be dedicated to helping students cross the street at the Deerview Avenue and Highway 6 intersection safely.
“Even when it rained or got cold outside, it was still worth it to me because helping people is the biggest thing. Rain or shine. That was fun.” Laschke reflected.
Laschke demonstrated his commitment to helping others and promoting safety by getting to school early each morning and staying later after school every day to help students travel safely, no matter the weather conditions.

Last summer Malachi Laschke worked as a janitor at Clear Creek Amana High School which paved the way for him being offered the job as the crossing guard. “The reason I agreed to the job was so I could help the kids cross the street and make sure everyone gets to school and home safe. It’s really important to me to help others.” Laschke explained.
Before and after school, Laschke would go to the teachers lounge to clock in and grab his stop sign and vest. Then he’d head out the door and make his way over to the corner near Hart Family Dentistry. In the mornings he helped students cross the street from around 7:40 am to 8:20 am. After school he would stay out there until 4:00 pm, except for Wednesdays with early dismissal he’d be out there until 2:00 to 2:30 pm.
He is currently taking a temporary break from his crossing guard duties to focus on his studies with the plan and hopes of returning in the near future to continue his commitment to helping others and keeping students safe.
