What is Inktober?

Inktober is an art tradition held throughout the entire month of October. The goal of Inktober is to create one piece of artwork each day using ink. For each day of inktober, there exists a different prompt that sets the theme for one’s artwork. As long as it is ink, you are not limited to what you can use. Let your heart run wild.

What materials are/can be used?

There is a wide variety of materials that contain ink. India Ink is about the closest you can get to using ink straight out of a bottle. Markers are some of the most reformed inking materials (less ink and more of other substances) And of course, there are other materials such as pens, highlighters, etc. You can use anything that you want to.

Who comes up with the prompts each year?

The answer would be Jake Parker—the creator and the person who introduced the idea to the world. He originally created it for himself as a way to improve his ink skills and create consistent drawing habits. A few instagram posts and he was a huge hit on the internet. He wasn’t the only one who liked the idea, so he put together a list and published it for anyone to use.

If you like the idea of making art every day, but don’t necessarily like the prompts, you could always look into other October art challenges. Like Goretober, Creeptober, or Drawtober. That’s not even all of them—there are tons of different versions online. You could even make your own if that’s what you would like.

Who can do Inktober?

The best thing about Inktober is that anyone can do it. You don’t need any special skills or tons of experience. It is supposed to be fun and help you improve. Bend the rules, make your own replica, if it means that is how you will enjoy it. And if you’re going to post it online, don’t use the logo unless you want to get framed for plagiarism.
